As I mentioned a few weeks back, I’ve been obsessed by the election. Like a highway rubbernecker, I just can’t tear myself away from the Republican trainwreck. While saturating myself with information, I’ve found that comedians and satirists have offered some of the most biting and trenchant insights of the campaign. It goes without saying that Saturday Night Live has had a triumphant resurgence with Tina Fey’s impersonation of Sarah Palin. David Letterman did some damage to John McCain. And night after night Jon Stewart has been, IMHO, nothing short of brilliant. (Do yourself a favor and check out Jason Jones’ visit to Wasilla piece on October 20. Devastating.) It’s all online.
But there are other (PG-13) gems out there as well:
- www.palinaspresident.us – A virtual Oval Office. Click on all the items in the room multiple times for all sorts of fun surprises. The site says it will be updating every day until Election Day.
- www.thegreatschep.com – In a video, a less potty-mouthed than normal Sarah Silverman urges Jewish grandchildren to go to Florida to convince their grandparents to vote for Obama. It’s beyond. Beyond beyond.
- Sarah Palin Vlog (scroll down and click on the Sarah Palin Vlog tab) – Before Tina Fey, loopy performance artist Sarah Benincasa was producing a “behind the scenes” Sarah Palin vlog on YouTube. Now on 23/6, she talks straight into the camera, sometimes with make artist/cousin “Deena” at her side, manically riffing on whatever is happening in the campaign.
- Unbelieveable McCain vs. Obama Dance-Off video – Obama, McCain and a “surprise challenger.”
And my new favorite campaign video, which hits all the bases:
Finally, as we get closer to Halloween,
- www.yeswecarve.com – Carve an Obama pumpkin. Do the google and you’ll find stencils for Palin and McCain. Now that’s scary!
And finally, finally, because it’s sweet, www.yeswecanholdbabies.com. Photos of Obama and kids. And funny: www.sendbarackyourbaby.com
Thanks for the laugh. I too have been obsessed, and a bit relieved as the train wreck has become inevitable (oh, better not count chickens and all that!). I found Palin’s convention speech appalling, just appalling and cannot understand how so many people were enchanted. I must be way at one end of the Myers-Brigg scale, in the thinking vs feeling or whatever. I honestly do not understand people at the other end of the spectrum.
Great links, LOL!
